Soil Fumigation and Microbial Community Impact

While fumigants in general provide significant reduction in targeted soilborne phytopathogens and weeds, the impact of reducing the rest of the soil microbial community is unclear. The soil microbial community plays a significant role in nutrient cycling and availability, and reducing the overall diversity may have a dramatic impact on the soil nutrient availability. Understanding this relationship may provide new information and strategies for applying and managing fertilizer applications and managing soil microbiology.
