Variety Testing Program: Radish
Evaluate yield and horticultural quality of radish varieties for Florida industry
The Florida radish is one of America’s most popular garnishes. Available fresh from
October through June, Florida radishes have a juicy, crisp texture and an earthy,
spicy, and peppery taste. The bright green tops are edible, too, and have a similar
peppery zing. Growers relay in non-hybrid varieties as the standard variety which
offer low yield and quality. Therefore, a variety trial was conducted in the fall
2009 with 21 hybrid and non-hybrid varieties in cooperation with Eugene McAvoy (Hendry
County Extension Service). Yield and quality was evaluated. Preliminary results
based in one season indicated that hybrid varieties can increase yield and quality
of the radish.
