Scouting and Pest Management Guidelines for Vegetables in SW Florida
Page 3

There can be no crop pests without a crop, so cultural practices are determining factors of pest populations. The choice of resistant varieties well adapted to our environment is one way to avoid many problems. Most of our vegetable crops begin in the transplant house where many pest and disease problems may begin as well. Clean transplants are the only way to start a healthy crop. Maintaining vigorous growth through proper cultural practices is another way to help plants sustain pest and disease pressure, although over-fertilization may actually make plants more susceptible to attack. These factors work together to determine how much it may be necessary to spray in order to maintain a healthy crop.
