Vol.7, No. 2 5th International Congress of Citrus Nurserymen This issue of the newsletter is dedicated to the forthcoming International Congress of Citrus Nurserymen. The meetings and tours will be in the Mediterranean Basin. Citrus nursery managers and growers will have the opportunity to talk with other nursery managers and see some of the worlds largest and advanced nurseries that produce both grove and ornamental trees. With an annual production of 5 million tons, Spain ranks first among the various citrus countries of the Mediterranean Region. The citron was cultivated in Mallorca by the early fifth century. The Arabs introduced the sour orange and the lemon in the eleventh century. The severe frost in February 1956 triggered a sudden spread of tristeza as a result of unexpected aphid outbreaks, thus initiating a complete reorganization of the Spanish orchards and the development of the Citrus Improvement Programme of Spain (CIPS) in 1975. The multiplication of new rootstocks to replace sour orange was linked to scion cultivars sanitation and nursery upgrading. Citriculture plays an important role in the Spanish economy and is one of the main sources of foreign exchange. The supply of certified disease-free elite citrus plants is remarkably well-organized through a network of highly professional nurserymen, and congressists will have first-hand information on the Spanish mass propagation and certification scheme. Congressists who are not attending the Moroccan pre-congress tour should arrive at Valencia airport on Friday afternoon 28 February 1997 where they will be welcomed by the organizing committee.
