Florida has much variability in soils, climate and growing season. The difference climate, soils, and length of growing season affect not only the types of forage that can be grown but the overall management system as well. The success of a beef cattle operation is directly related to the amount and quality of forage available to the animals throughout the year. As a general rule, readily available pasture of high quality forage is the cheapest source of feed nutrients. Florida’s native and improved pastures can furnish viable forage. Grazing management is regarded as more of an art than a science. Knowledge is required to help solve a perceived conflict in the use and value of rangelands in Florida. It has become increasingly important to understand how livestock production can be increased, and how these increases affect wildlife, water quality and soil nutrients, and at the same time, how environmental and biodiversity regulations affect the livestock industry. Therefore a proper balance between the range and livestock needs to be obtained through understanding the requirements and characteristics of various grazing animals as well as the plants. |
